Gutter refused to look at the schoolteacher when he came back inside the suite and sat down at the table. He wasn’t going to tell him how the other guy, King Squared, had walked out of here the same way he’d come—through the shadows. Nowhere was safe. But that wasn’t anything new. Shadows had always been dangerous to him.

But… Making a move on my mom.

First, the dragon lady didn’t look like any mom Gutter had ever seen. And, second, she liked the teacher? Ugh.

Everything was messed up.

Gutter inhaled through clenched teeth to keep as much of the teacher’s smoky smell out as possible.

“Aren’t you a little cold without your shirt?” Gutter asked, bitterly.

“I’m a dragon. I have fire inside me.”

Which meant the teacher had never felt cold. Gutter had felt cold before. So cold his body and head had ached and ached until he thought he would die from it.

“I’ve loved Aura for a hundred years,” the teacher said out of the blue, as if Gutter cared. Which he didn’t. “But she loved someone else, so I know how that feels.”

“You don’t know anything about me.” And there was no point talking. Gutter wasn’t going to say another word to him. He didn’t deserve it.

Gutter fixed his gaze on the table.

“She’s mine now,” the teacher went on, rubbing it in, “but she’s in trouble.”

Gutter’s head came up. “You could’ve fought for her.”

“I am.”

“No, you’re not. You ran away from the people outside your house. And you held her back from the old witch. You’re not much of a dragon if you can’t kill them.” Gutter realized he was still talking and clenched his teeth shut so as not to say any more.

“There are laws.”

But he couldn’t help himself. “You must not love her very much.”

“Okay, how about this,” the teacher said. “I swear to you that I will burn the world to ash. This great city. All the cities and all the people in them, all the children, all the mothers and fathers. I will tear Xanthippe apart with my teeth and eat her heart—”

Gutter’s eyes went wide.

“—if I fail to help Aura…my way first.”

“You could do all that?” Gutter doubted him entirely.

“A lot of it, at least before other dragons stopped me. Certainly, enough murder and destruction to satisfy you, I think.”

Gutter growled at him.

“I won’t be able to help myself, you see. I waited too long for her. I need her.”

“You’re not going to give the Eye to King Squared are you?” Because that Rex deserved the most ridiculous name.

“What do you think?”

Gutter already knew the answer was no.

The teacher took a deep breath. “I found a pack for you.” Another statement out of the blue. “You’d have standing going in and would only have to fight to keep it as you become a man. It’d take some time, but I think eventually—I hope—you’ll see them as family.”

Gutter’s stomach knotted. If the lady was in trouble, he needed to be here with her.

“But it occurs to me that you might have already found a pack yourself.
